on Feb 12th, 2009If This Was A Plant It Would Be Dead

Whoa!  Stop the presses.  I actually have a little NAC talk tonight.  The other day we were talking about something and I logged into one of our LANsight appliances for the first time in a long time.  All of our Nevis gear has just been running, doing what it does.  As I logged on I made the comment “if this was a plant it would be dead” because they haven’t required much attention for some time.

Now to the meat of the topic.  Windows Server 2008 changes the way that Remote Desktop clients authenticate.  Previous to Server 2008 the credentials were authenticated at the server for remote desktop connections.  In Server 2008 this changes and the RDP client actually passes the authentication from the endpoint instead of at the server.  With the “bump in the wire” this causes the endpoint to authenticate again if the connection is made with a different user such as an admin account or service account.  This causes a momentary loss of network access while the authentication occurs.  There is a solution for it so I’ll be sure to post about it once its implemented.

So what else is new?  I’ve been grappling with Windows Server 2008 Core in the lab for a domain upgrade the last week or two.  For the strictly gui dependent nerd (present company included) Server 2008 Core is kind of mind blowing.  Its one thing when you hop on a ESX box and the command line is all you ever get.  But the mental transition from GUI only to command line only with Server 2008 Core is a radical change.  Its like waking up one day and the sun rises from the west.  Something you’ve always known is drastically different.

Here’s a brain buster out there for anyone familiar with Server 2008…why is the “source” column in event viewer blank when viewing it remotely?  I haven’t been able to figure that one out.
