on Nov 29th, 2008Great Couple of Days

What a great couple of days its been if you’re a college football fan and follow the Big 12.  It all started Friday afternoon with a sloppy but miraculous Nebraska win off a 57 yard field goal with less than two minutes to play.  I thought Nebraska would roll but they were slow getting out of the gates and ended up in a dog fight until the end.  Here is the 57 yard field goal to give Nebraska the lead, 33-31.  Ndamukong Suh got a pick six on Colorado’s ensuing possession to ice that game at 40-31.  This victory finished the season at 8-4 with a 5-3 conference record.

Then today was the Kansas vs Missouri game which was a thriller as well.  Kansas, a 16 point underdog, won 40-37 giving the Missouri Tigers a 9-3 record with a 5-3 conference record.  Hmmmm, that 5-3 conference record sounds familiar doesn’t it?  For some ridiculous reason I can’t explain the Big 12 acknowledges division co-champions.  Last year Missouri and Kansas were co-champions.  Mizzou won the head to head battle and thus got the great priviledge of getting clobbered in the Big 12 Championship game.

Now never in a million years would I claim a division co-championship for Nebraska after they got demoralized on their home field by Missouri.  But what I will claim is that in Missouri’s two best seasons in school history they weren’t even able to win the division outright in the official statistics maintained by the Big 12 conference.  And they just gave their coach a $2.5 million a year contract extension.  Money well spent.

Missouri clobbered Nebraska head to head and earned the right to get beaten silly by a team from the South.  Mizzou is the Big 12 North champions in my opinion.  To bad the Big 12 conference doesn’t agree with me.
