I spent a good part of this afternoon and this evening getting MRTG running in our environment to monitor all of our switchport bandwidth. Its not a real exciting thing to do but it does have some value. The obvious value is more insight into our traffic patterns that will help troubleshoot network problems. The more specific reason I took the time to install it was to correlate data from port counters in an attempt to identify any over subscription on our Cisco 4500 series switches. This evening I had two hours of Dancing with the Stars to raise my eyes from the laptop every few minutes. Not a bad distraction to have!!
MRTG or Dancing with the Stars? That’s a tough one!
