Mr. Bump on Jan 31st, 2008Damn you, Bill!
Microsoft. Dirty bastards. They had to go and change the way to deploy Office 2007. Now I’m feeling like the biggest idiot in the world because I can’t get Visio 2007 to install with a startup script in a group policy. Here’s the beautiful thing…the logs say it installed successfully!
From the […]

Yesterday, TB (identity being protected…FBI…long story) stumbled across a URL for an unknown internal web server. It naturally raised some suspicion. After checking it out we quickly realized there was abolutely no security on it and it appeared that it was being used. But by who? I could have looked at the web server logs […]
Mr. Bump on Jan 28th, 2008Vacation…I want to go back!
Sure has been quiet around here lately. I was on vacation last week in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico which is about 45 minutes south of Cancun. A week of no internet, cell phone, blackberry or much television. It was a great time and I think I left the better part of my liver functionality down there. […]

A new columnist over at Dark Reading, James Quin, writes a column about something that hits close to home…enforcing a security policy. He makes a lot of great points and closes nicely with:
“Enforcing security policy is a “people process” that needs to be supported by technological controls. If you want to be sure that your security […]

The problem I wrote about last night as been resolved. A quick call to Foundry support was the answer. The engineer mentioned specifically configuring a “management-vlan” as part of our management VLAN configuration on the FGS 648P edge switch. This limited the mystery broadcasts to the management VLAN only. Our LANenforcer 2024 was much happier after this additional configuration.
How’s this […]
Mr. Bump on Jan 14th, 2008Working through some things
Thursday night we put a our new Foundry switch fabric through one of our LANenforcer 2024s. We are seeing some odd traffic from the Foundry edge switch that is causing the LANenforcer 2024 to blip the communication between the edge switch and the core switch. This is something we need to work through to figure out. Originally […]

Stumbled upon this list of Top 20 Internet Millionairs Under 30. Its a shame I’m not under 30 or I’d be on that list! In all actuality I had the value of bumpinthewire.com estimated and its only worth $8. That’s $2 dollars less than I paid for the dad-gum domain name! Aren’t investments supposed to […]
Mr. Bump on Jan 7th, 2008Habits
John Sawyer over at Dark Reading has a blog post about “The Four Habits of Highly Effective Security People” which is a knock off of Stephen Covey’s “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.” The four habits are:
1. Beginning with the end in mind - As John points out this is the mirage in the desert…there is no […]
Mr. Bump on Jan 3rd, 2008Still swinging
2008 is still taking jabs at us. That crazy DHCP problem showed up again today at roughly the same time of the morning. Nothing like a couple of dozen users not being able to get on the network to throw a wrench into your plans. Luckily our shipment of Foundry FGS switches had arrived so […]
Mr. Bump on Jan 2nd, 2008Can we start over?
2008 came out swinging today. We had three fires to put out by 9:30 this morning. The biggest was a DHCP server issue that took us much to long to identify. Then this afternoon the hits just kept on coming when I was the second person in our department to hit this little gem…a bad […]
